I have been fighting algae (cyano in one tank and green hair in the other). Both are new tanks. I keep seeing people say that they delt with it and then it went away after some time. My question: Is fighting algae with a new tank just part of the cycle and is patience a large part of the cure in addition to work?

Yes, the algae is part of the cycle. It will go away in time. When I had cyano I would use a turkey baster to blow on it from the side to try and peel it away from the sand, so I didn't lose to much sand. Once the weight of the sand is off, it will float. Scoop it out with a net and you have nutrient export. I also have a queen conch who seems to like cyano. The hair algae will be easily removed with turbo snails. They seem to love the stuff. Just be carefull what is going into the tank as far as feeding goes. Over feeding will make the algae cycle last longer.
