I was surprised to read on a bottle of Seachem Iodide that Iodine is "just as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef aquarium." I've used several other brands (Kent etc.) that specifically say "Iodine" on the bottle - so are they just not calling it Iodide in the other brands or is Seachem wrong?

I don't actually recommend any iodine additives, but if I were to add it (and when I used to), I'd use iodide, not molecular iodine, I2.

This article has a lot more info, including discussion on toxicity:

wow great read Randy thanks for that - so do you not recommend iodide to assist corals w/ over-exposure to light? It's hard to sort out some of the BS put out by manufacturers...

No, I don't recommend dosing it based on present information available.

Lack of data showing requirement for dosing directly or lack of data showing need for iodine or organic iodine derivatives in marine organisms? :)

Lack of evidence that iodine supplements are beneficial for any organisms that most people would consider keeping in a reef tank. :)
