I got a Mandarin from someone that had it in a well-established tank. By the evening of putting it into my main tank, it was showing SW "ich" spots, so I put it into QT. Did a FW dip & the spots were gone completely--never came back. The fish has been in QT for >5 wks, so I figured it was good to put back into the main tank. That was this morning & now it's got spots again! None of the other fish in that tank have ever had it. What's going on???

Any fish picking on it?

They have a heavy slime coat: sometimes on an aragonite sand bed they pick up white dots that can look pretty convincingly ich-ish, but it it's just dust. Observe a given dot. It may disappear.

I don't think so...

OK, I take that back... you might be right! They really aren't as evenly placed as "ich" usually is--mostly on his back. I can't believe I kept him in QT for so long & did a dip on him & everything! Thanks!

Just kind of watch him. I swear mine gets down and rolls in the dust. I've been at this decades and she's fooled me several times. But if there's a chance it's something else, wouldn't want to make a mistake with it.

That's actually pretty funny--no wonder the FW dip worked so well!

I was so worried, cause it was covered in spots... um... er... sand!

Yeah the skin can't get ich but ich can always be found on the gill plates that cant be seen. I agree with the above about being sand sticking to the slime coat.

Yeah, I was wondering how 1 FW dip coulda cured it. No sand in the QT.

They also bury themselves at night, atleast mine does. I catch her with a flashlight every now and then and almost pass right by as she just looks like a pile of sand.

It didn't. Being that this is the 1st time I've had one, I didn't know this. Thanks for the education guys!

That's why I was so happy to get one from a long established tank!

When I get another one for my larger tank I'm going to make sure it is fat in the first place. Having a 125 with a fuge should help so I won't have to spot feed it rod food every night either.
