Many of you have heard me whine about my tank's temp (Tmax thus far was 86.7....no dead stuff...YET). I have read more about chillers than I ever care to for the remainder of my life. (fans have not solved my problem)

For those of you with chiller experience: JBJ Artica or Pacific Coast Imports 1/4 hp chiller for a 170gal acrylic (home to fish, inverts, softies)?

I will be making my purchase within the next few days, so your advice (especially personal experience) is desperately needed!

Sounds pretty shady. I'd be careful.

I'm running a PCI CL-280 chiller, only a 1/10 HP model but I've only got a 65 gal tank in an air conditioned room. But with 4 VHOs and a plant light on the refugium, plus a total of 6 powerheads and pumps, the temp. easily reaches 85 without a chiller. (this model could drop the temp. down into the 60's with no problem... I kept an Aplysia tank at 55F with it earlier this year) Anyway, I had an unfortunate water spill three days ago, and wouldn't you know, just a couple drops of salt got on the controller circuitry and bridged two input wires, shorting out the panel. Tim at PCI technical support was instrumental in helping me ID the problem, and the circuit panel was shipped to me overnight. So after only 36 hours of warmer temps (during which I cut all VHOs except for one), we're chilling again.

So kudos to PCI tech support!

Richard is a great guy to do business with, you can feel safe, if he says the chiller is in good shape it is. I bought stuff from his ebay auctions, great guy.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and the votes of confidence re: dealing with the Pimp....oops....I mean Richard. Not only did he have a chiller for me, but delivered it, and set it up! This club is great!!! Oh, by the way, the chiller is working nicely. (It feels good to have saved several hundred dollars! Now my kids can still eat...:)).
