I was thinking of adding a filter sock to my drain line into my sump. I have seen someone who makes a "holder" for the sock. Anyone remember? Maybe a picture if you have one

How do you guys clean your filter socks? I had been throwing mine in the washing machine with bleach and rinsing twice. However, someone told me that is a bad idea since there could be soap/detergent residue in the washing machine. Thanks.

same way, but no bleach, but some people use bleach

Do most people machine wash their filter socks? No need to be concerned about detergent residue?

Sounds good. Is using bleach a good idea? Just seems kind of risky. How come you dont use bleach?

Excellent answer if I may so myself. : ) To bleach or not to bleach a filter sock? Just doesnt sound kosher to bleach a filter sock that will go into your tank.

I don't like my filter sock it's a pain in the but to clean. Ever heard of anyone that uses a vortex filter?

Here (http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=BS1123) is the filter sock I use, and Here (http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=BSAMK) is the Mount/holder. I wash mine in the washing machine, no bleach and they work fine. I do a quick rinse before I put them back into the sump so they are wet when put back.

I have been cleaning my filter socks with bleach for over 2 years now. I use straight bleach, and then wash again with just water. I have never had a problem. Small amounts of bleach will not hurt your tank, the small amount that might get into you tank will not cause any harm. I know of people that add straight bleach to there reef tank to increase ORP. Look at bleach as an oxidizing biocide just like ozone. If anything, your ORP will increase slightly if any residue bleach is still in the sock(s). Just my 2 cents!

I wash with a little bleach and an extra rinse. Let the sock fully dry before reuse. Any residual bleach will evaporate out.

Thanks to everyone for their input and informative responses. I didnt realize that bleach would not be harmful to my tank. What is ORP and I assume that increasing it is a good thing. I'm also not familiar with oxidizing biocide. Thanks.

I wash mine with bleach but use the double rinse cycle on my washer. No problems at all.

REMF-How low does your sock sit in the water? That sock seem short. My sump is a little tall and my water level low, I dont think that sock would reach much of the water. Do they make longer socks for that holder?

TracyZeuner- The holder is about 6" from the lip where it hangs on the edge to the rim where it holds the sock, and the sock itself is 13" from rim to tip.

Does it matter where you put it, by that I mean on the skimmer side or fuge side or is both good

hey remf are you using a berlin sump? was wondering if that will fit on standard aquarium lips/edges in the sumo. i use a 30long sump and have the sock wedged. looks like a good product just wondering about what i had asked about the size

The inside width of the lip is 1", I have mine on a Rubbermaid sump.
