try as i might, there is no way to get a pic at the instant one of the babies fledges. this is the best i could do, i got some fledgings on video, played one in slo-mo, paused it and took this pic w/my digital camera. looks like we'll have 5 more fledglings either today or tomorrow. they are peeking out the hole, the parents have ceased feeding them very much and are sitting on the gutter singing, trying to coax them out into the big scary world. :)

I think the problem is that you fledged while taking the picture. I hear old people do that a lot.

Nina, I meant to tell you--I have bluebird eggs in the nestbox that had been occupied by the sparrows! I also have seen the male feeding fledglings from their first nest of the summer. They look like they are keeping pretty busy with the fledglings and the new nest.

pete, are you speaking from experience? :p

great news catdoc!! if you haven't yet, it wouldn't hurt a bit to go ahead and install a sparrow spooker. if a sparrow once claimed the box, he could easily come back to re-claim it and you'd end up with a bunch of dead bb nestlings. not a pretty sight!

this is our second clutch. we will easily get a third and quite possibly a fourth. since i don't have the time to devote to the other nest boxes as i have in years past, i plugged the holes in the other 5 so this is our only active nest this year. even so, if we can get 3 or 4 successful broods, our skies will be "blue" all winter! :)

i have never seen it myself but i do know from other bluebird landlords that many times fledglings will come back to help feed the next brood. that would be sooooo cool to see!
