You're going to laugh, but the best way to clean a keyboard is in the sink with a brush and hot water. Granted you'll need to stand it up in the sun for a couple of days before you can use it again but it works great.

We used to do that all time when I was running the help desk at a previous job. Even my employees looked at me funny when I suggested it. As long as it's dry when you plug it back it it's no problem.

Mine's a mess but I still want to get that flat keyboard oneday and that would be really easy to clean.

A teacher I work with actually takes all of the keys off and has her typing class put them back in.....if they put them in the wrong place, it messes up thier typing and they don't do so hot in the class.....they tend to figure it out pretty quick anyway.

Pretty funny......:)

wow doug really? i would have never thought to do that.........next time it needs cleaning i'll do that......this is a newer keyboard.......so i want to keep it clean

we had a african grey i rescued and fostered (now in a permenate home not too far from me) but used to eat key boards all the time......but now that he's gone we got a newer fancy keyboard......and now it's a CLEAN key board lol.

Pop the keys off with a screwdriver and put them in a bowl of warm, soapy water.

I have found that a black keyboard does wonders for dirt.;)
I just bought the new MS ergonomic black keyboard with the soft wrist pad built in and I love it.
Anyone use the ergonomic ones? I never could type on the regular ones myself.
Big thing I have found when cleaning, turn it over and make darn sure it's over a trash can:):)
What a mess it can collect. Cookie crumbs, hair, M&Ms etc,. Not mine of course. It's all from that little man that lives in my compute and changes all of my settings while I sleep:)
Also, I wash my hands before coming into the office. Keeps the keys much cleaner.

yeah you could do that but this key board cost about 40 bucks so i rather not get a new one   it takes a bit to get dirty so it's not often i clean it.

i'm glad i'm not the only one that cleans it though

Had 2 people at work spill coffee into their keyboards

The guy mopped it up/turned it upside down & didn't tell me
Over the weekend it dried up & froze solid. I gave him an old clunker of a keyboard to use

A gril did the same thing - called my immediately. I gave her another old clunker & cleaned/washed hers in the sink & put it in the window to dry....for 2 weeks :D

No-one in the company ever spilled anything into their keyboards after that. I still had clunker ugly keyboards left...just waiting

Physicians, on average, tend to have a little OCD, but this is one thing I've never gotten into (and I hope not, because I'd hate to have to take time of RC every time I notice some dust on the keyboard).
I usually don't even notice as long as all the keys are there.

Keyboards are one of the top dirtiest things in a home next to door knobs and light switches(Especially if it is public). I cleaned a clients one time because it stopped working. I popped the keys off and look in.,... Scared me to death. Hair all over and I am not reffering to the stuff that falls off your head but a little lower. Dishwashers work wonders. Just make sure it is 100% dry before you use it again.

in college we constantly spilled beer on the keyboard. Take a shower with it it will work once it dries out.

I keep my keyboard clean as much as possible. I even have canned air and handy little wipes for electronics to help me on the job. I'm kinda sloppy though, I've spilled coffee and coke in my keyboard (usually from when I spit up when I read something funny online). I've ashed in my keyboard more times than I care to count as well.

I was at work Friday night (part-time LFS), and I spilled a bunch of salwater on the keyboard and mouse. Beerguy is right...just set them up and let them dry out.

Thanks for the advice guys... I'm loading my keyboard into the dishwasher now...

Now, one question. Do I use the heat dry or the "no heat" dry option?

James, your braver then I am, but let us know how it works out, I may run my old white ones thru it. I quit using them because I wore nail marks in the keys and they were rough but still works fine.
I am wondering about the drying also.

The office cleaners use my PC at night and they don't clean the keyboard neither. I left them a little something on the keyboard one day, the next morning it was still there but sqashed. That's how I knew.

I think they meant locking the operating system, not putting it in a locked room. i.e. press ctl+alt+del and press the Lock Computer button.
