Watch for the car that starts leaking gasoline after the crash. One of my fears is being trapped in a tunnel that's full of fire and smoke and no way out.

Those crashes are from ice on the floor of the tunnel. The tunnel isn't property ventilated or drained, so a tiny bit of accumulated water will freeze on the road. Since there isn't any sunlight down there, the ice basically forms a slick sheet and more or less never melts. Salt/sand don't do too much for it.

If you guys saw the volume of equipment, technology, and manpower it takes to *properly* maintain a tunnel, I bet it would be pretty mind boggling. The Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority in NYC has one of the biggest budgets of any municipal authority in the city, for example.

Saltz Creep, no worries if you're in a properly designed tunnel with fire suppression and ventilation. There will be more than enough fresh air moving through to keep you oxygenated and free of smoke, and the fire will be put out very quickly.
