every morning, she's out in the back yard. every day, she ventures a little closer to the flower garden. every day, i release the hounds to chase her away. i figured one or two days being chased out of the yard by a couple of no-legged tazmanian devils would discourage her but noooo, i think she waits in the woods to see when they come back in the house and then she comes back. she's purty but my flowers are purtier and i wanna keep 'em that way!

 So I'm not the only one that has to put up with them?! Years past we never did plant much because as soon as anything started doing good the deer would come through and mow everything off. Now that I have the boys they don't come through quite as often, when I first planted I still had to run a few off and throw some rocks at them ;).

One day a sneaky one must have got in and mowed a few blooms off but left most of the stuff alone......for now.

Nina-that looks like one of those fake deer you see in people's yard for target practice! Bring out some moth balls in some old nylons, the smell is supposed to keep them away....Of course if you had a dog with legs they would have caught her by now!! ;) :D

Wanna borrow Journey and Eden for a while? Make your own "Wild Kingdom" TV special??? They're great at taking down rabbits, I'm sure they'd have a field day with a deer!

jpfelix

the deer around here don't come any closer than the bird feeders (about 20ft). maybe you could start peeing around your flowers? deer don't like that, until they get used to it.

otherwise, a shotgun shell full of salt will make it run!

Is it illegal to feed them?

In NY it is, because of the wasting disease I believe.

I need coffee.

Nina51
06/15/2006, 09:52 AM
yeah, it's illegal but i don't consider a deer wandering into my back yard to munch on flowers "illegal" so i think i'm safe. :D

however, i suppose the salt lick i put out for them could be considered against the law. please, don't rat me out. ;)

emily, are you making fun of my dogs?? :p

I have heard of products involving coyote urine that create a perimeter. There is deer repellent, whatever is in it. Your dogs may smell it and add to the fragrance.

If you have any of these in your garden

Cape Honeysuckle
Firebush
Blue Sage
Heather
Salvia Greggi
http://www.birds-n-garden.com/birdgarden.html

this is what's most probably attracting her.

If you do have one of those plants (as much as it main pain you) you might consider remove it to remove temptation or find something that will deter her.

oh, i just let the dogs out. she's only there first thing in the morning, about 6:30. she's really not causing a problem and as soon as i open the door, she bounds out to the woods. trust me, there's no danger these dogs are gonna actually catch her. :)

i have a bambi complex of the worst kind. :D

on the legallity of feeding....laws vary state to state but here in MO it's legal to feed. as long as you aren't "baiting" them. the problem is that "baiting" is often up to the agent and/or judge. although around here, the deer population is soooo thick you don't have to bait.

i've had so many close calls. between my house and the town where i work, i bet i see 40-50 deer almost every day. thankfully, most of the time it's down by the river well away from the road. i'm sure when i have the inevitable enounter that you describe, my bambi complex will come to a screeching halt.

I have the same problem, the deer are so domesticated that they will come into our front yard into the middle of the day and eat from our flower gardens. And they practically destroyed the fence we have for our Beagle just trying to jump over it because they like to sleep in our backyard!.

Needless to say, all our carefully planned flowerbeds are missing flowers, and for the second year in a row the Oriental Stargazer lillies patch won't be blooming.

Our area is actually overrun with deer and foxes now, we have a family of about 8-10foxes in the crik behind us as well as about 40 deer that call our street their home. Its not unommon to see them travelling arcross our roads as well. Countless accidents from hitting them, and I must say, most do not fare well for the driver :(.

oh you'll be sorry travis. i'm gonna sic my corgis on you. you better run for your life! have you ever actually SEEN a corgi run? make no mistake about it mister, no mistake at all...when a corgi wants something and it requires running, well, you better look fast because dat dog'll just be a blur. of course, this would usually have to involve something edible. ;)

You might want to consider putting in a deer feeder on the backside of your yard. Fill it with food the deer will like better than your flowers like: Soybeans ($15/50lbs) and/or Whole Kernal Corn ($4/50lbs). This way the deer will eat the (cheap) food instead of your (expensive) flowers. And you will still get the joy of watching her (and her babies).

With all those foxes I would worry about rabies.

We found a coiled up rattle snake on our back porch earlier this week. Both of my dog were bit last summer by rattle snakes. They stayed away from this one.

but does it cover 5 acres? i have my flowers spread out all over the place.

another problem i would have is that if it sprays every time it detects motion, my dogs would set it off even if they ARE short and then they'd have wet feet all the time and then they'd track sand into the house and i don't have time to dyson my place every single day!
