That ring tone is hilarious. I can barely hear it...but I would think it would be tough to hear for anyone if there is any background noise.

What I could hear, hurt a little bit. But I don't know how anyone could here that in a normal setting, I had to mute the stereo to hear it, and turn the volume all the up on my laptop.

I'm betting that the sound would carry pretty well against background noise. I know I can tell when the kids have forgotten to turn off the upstairs tv b/c it puts out a similar high-pitched hum. It makes ME crazy but hubby never can hear it.

Darren, my husband already must have the device to block the sound of my voice--he just isn't sharing the details!

Ok, try this out:

http://www.ochenk.com/entry.php?id=63

Start off at 10,000HZ, and see what you can make your way up to.

I peaked at 20,000HZ. Remember, you have to keep the volume the same all the way through, no cranking it up for the high ones. That's cheating. ;)

Why don't they just use vibrate?

I don't know what the norm is, but you can't hear my vibrate at all, unless it's on a hard surface like a table.

That is great. I had this professor who said the first day of class that if a phone rang he would answer it for you.......... My buddy ran a busness and his phone went off more than 5 times during the semester. He just kept forgetting to turn it on vibrate.

He would just silence it get up and walk outside then answer. IT was great. :) I eventually started to remind him untill it became habbit as it really annoyed the proffesor and made hw harder. Which in fliuds is not a good thing.

Can you try it on another computer. I also am missing 18 and 19 but can hear 20. I am not on a crappy sound card by any means. I tested it on one of my other pcs and had the same results. You might just not hear those frequencies.

The ring tone, which initially spread in pirated form through the Internet, is touted as a way for kids to get notified of a call or text message without adults knowing.

We were testing this at work the other day. Interestingly, all of us residents could still here it, but none of the techs or staff could (even though one of the staff is younger than some of the residents). A few of them thought we were playing a prank; I had to prove to them that the sound for the computer was on.

It's loud to me; I could hear it a room away from where people were testing it (and I'm older than the teacher who spoke with the NY Times whose students said she wasn't supposed to hear it :D ). I actually thought people were joking when they said they couldn't hear it. I'm a little surprised, since I know I have some hearing loss from some undiagnosed/untreated infections I had as a child.

What, an adult can't see a kid interacting with a cell phone?!? If the kid is alone in a room, a vibrate setting can't be heard either. If the kid shouldn't be using the phone, take it away.

I think this is much a do about nothing.

Arrest all teenagers immediately; sell them into slavery, making sure they're shipped far (far!) from these shores. The ones who by luck and pluck escape and find their way back, say 10 or 12 years later, can be welcomed back into society, so long as they don't use hand-held gizmos of any kind.

It's a great idea.

The biggest danger would be that they could develop a taste for soccer while living elsewhere; I think the other threads have made it clear we can't have that here.
