I didn't see any FAQ's about VHO's on the forum ( plus I have dial up I can't search all 81 pgs). ;)
I have a 55 gallon reef with 130pounds of LR currently using a 40w actinic and 40w 6700k with reflectors. I want a better lighting system but Ihave tons of tube coral and I have read that they don't like bright light.
I prefer not to have to use halides as I have children and I am scared they will tough them. We do not have a a canopy on the tank ( just glass top)

Opinions??Sugestions???

I have vho's on my 75. I have 2 ARO AS-220 ballasts running 4 48" tubes. You could get 1 ARO AS-220 and wire it to your existing set up. Cost about $45.

you could also go t-5 as another option.
eithr way, DIY the lighting and you will save a TON of $$$$.

VHO = Very High Output Fluorescent, one 48" lamp is 120 watts.

T5 I think would be a better option when you consider long term $$$. The bulbs last much longer (18 months give or take from what I've read) instead of 6 months with VHO (which I have). Also they produce less heat and are more efficient to run. I am going to be changing from VHO to T5 very soon myself for all the above mentioned reasons.

I run 4 x 110 watt VHOs on an IceCap ballast on my 75g mixed reef with good results, and I only change the bulbs every 12-14 months. :)
