TO clean or not to clean? I have about a 10g sump on my 65g display. I clean out the skimmer and pumps routinly, but so far have been letting the walls grow algea, now it is getting pretty nasty down there. I also have cheato growing very well.

I will siphon the sump, but I leave the algae down there alone. I figure, if its growing down there, its eating something. If you keep pulling it out of the sump, its gonna grow elsewhere.

I've never had algae grow in a sump. I get detritus which i syphon and get some sponge looking things which I leave alone but never grow any amount of algae. The overflow is another story, I clean that occasionally.

I leave the algae alone. Definitely better to have it growing down there than in the display tank. I haven't had much (system is still young), but I leave it be. I do, however, suck out detritous from the bottom of the sump when I can see it starting to build up.
