So...Memorial Day weekend...I got whiplash and broke a tooth. Back still hurts, neck still hurts, tooth still sensitive, and now I have an incredibly painful canker sore to boot. Cripes! Thank goodness for extra strength painkillers.

Anyone know of any home remedies for cankers? This is my first one since I was like 10 and I forget what can the best thing is to do.

That blows. This week I tore some ligaments in my ribs. 800mg Ibuprofen doesn't touch the pain. I went to the dr today and he said, "Try Aleve." lol

Canker sores? ... ? valtrex?

Are you talking about the ones inside the mouth or the ones outside? Outside, I tend to use Carmex or Toothpaste. Both of which are also great for pimples and other blimishes. Inside, I tend to gargle with hydrogen peroxide (diluted) and/or a salty water. (I have to watch my use of "saltwater" on a marine aquarium board ;) )

Inside. Outside is oral herpes, inside is canker sores. I'll have to try a saltwater rinse...easiest thing to do probably (I feel stupid for not thinking of it, haha). Thanks!

I've always used the hydrogen peroxide swish. Just make sure you don't swallow any of it. That's a whole new sick to your stomach.

Broken teeth and ripped muscles on Memorial Day weekend? Cripes, what were you people doing? My weekend consisted of sipping adult beverages and flipping burgers.

Ah, gotcha.
Yea, we used hydrogen peroxide to try and induce vomiting in our dog after my father gave her a 800mg tablet of ibuprofen.
That was a nightmare.

The few times I've had them, I've just used mouthwash like every few hours. Seems to at least dull the pain by keeping your whole mouth minty-numb.

Playing hockey, duh! :D

Adida, are you sure that it is a canker sore and not a cut from your broken tooth?

I didn't have burgers, but had Dinosaur Barbecue pork. And... I just sipped the adult beverages too quickly. N'stuff.

The dinosaur would definitely be my choice for commercial food on a Memorial Day.

A commercial site.

I think it's his first interest that made him do it.

It's definitely a canker sore...the tooth broke on that weekend and the sore appeared yesterday.

And I got myself all injured by diving into a pool that I thought was deeper than it actually was. I'm just grateful I didn't die or get paralyzed. I'll take whiplash and a broken tooth over that.

It is common to get a sore like that after mouth injury. Rinsing with salty water is a good idea. They have over the counter stuff that works great too.

Holy Schneike! I'd say that 4 of 5 people who dive and hit hard enough to do that kind of damage wind up with a spinal cord injury. You are incredibly lucky!

There is nothing that will make the canker sore heal more quickly, but simple baby teething gels applied frequently to the sore will markedly improve your pain.

Yup - I used to have a doctor that would use the line "I can give you something to help you get rid of it in 14 days or you could leave it alone for 2 weeks."

BTW - We've got a family friend who's still hasn't regained the use of his legs after a similar incident. You were very lucky.

I hate the gel products sold OTC. They all seem to just make my whole mouth go totally numb. And we all know that drool and slackjaw don't exactly excite the ladies.

So der, have you actually told the Lizards where you've been for the last year?

I'll keep my mouth shut.

Unless I've been using that junk again. In which case it'll hang slightly open.

MY grandma has this white powder that I have used for 30 years on canker sores. I think it is alum but I am not sure. You just put alittle powder on the sore and let it sit for a minute or so and then rinse. It stings alittle but after rinsing it feels noticably different.

Yeah, I stayed up practically all night after the accident, partially because I was in pain, but also because I realized how much worse it could've been. I didn't even get a concussion or anything...just some strained muscles. There hasn't been a day since the accident that I haven't thought about how amazingly lucky I was.
