the inevitable happened last night. mom insists on cleaning the kitchen when she's here. after she leaves, it takes me months to find my stuff.

last night, after our seafood feast, mom was cleaning. i came in the house just in time to see her dumping something down the sink. it was a big pan. a reeeeally big pan. i had deep fried some breaded shrimp in the reeeeeally big pan and there was a reeeeeeally large amount of vegetable oil in the reeeeeally big pan. probably 2 quarts, if not more.

i said MOM, don't DO it!!!! too late, it was already done. so, down the drain went at least 2 quarts of vegetable oil. mind you, mom is a city girl. she has no concept whatsoever of septic tanks. we, however, do and we are verrrrrry careful about what goes down the sink.

my question is, is there anything i could put down the drain to avoid a huge clog that will ultimately require digging UP the septic tank and having it pumped out? i don't particularly relish the idea of that not to mention the $$$ it would cost to have somebody come out here and do it.

is it saturday yet??? ;)

LOL, good lord I don't think you're supposed to put oil down any sink. Was it liquid? That might help, when I see my brother this weekend should I ask him? He's a plumber. I spose you already use Rid-X?

amen debi!!! yes, it was liquid veg oil and yes, please do ask your brother and then call me!

i am surprised that every sink and toilet in the entire state of minnesota isn't clogged up because mom just puts whatEVER down the drains. she has a garbage disposal, i don't, so you can imagine that at 81, she forgets she's not supposed to put stuff down the sink drain. oy!!

the only thing we have ever used, and this came from a plumber, is yeast. i dump a cup full down each toilet about once a month. when i remember. let's see, when was the last time...? ;)

81? Wow, she looks really good. I can't imagine putting oil down any sink is a good thing. Maybe you could run some warm water down your sink and then dump yeast down it? Add some sugar to make the yeast work better. Not sure what else Rid-x has in it, but that's what my brother told me to use when we were on a septic system. Yuck, I don't envy you if the sump sucker has to come.

Nina I can't believe your Mom is 81, she looks awesome, like I said, you've come from good genes ;) ...

Hmmm, I know a bit of this and that goes down my kitchen drain, and I try to avoid anything but water, b/c hubby would flip if he had to pay for a plumber  ... Good luck!!!

Nope it's not saturday yet :p ...

a cup of yeast?down each toilet?,,,oh my goodness! im surprised the lid didnt foam over. go to wally world and get some Ridx.

yeast feeds on sugars. Ridx is a conglomeration of different bacterias, including strains that eat grease. follow the directions as to how much to use with size of tank. fortunately its spring time and the oil isnt cold and congealed, and the bacteria can thrive in a favorable temp environment.

(2 days till Saturday.....good luck)

It's liquid and therefore I wouldn't think it would congeal and cause a clog. I'd be a little concerned about your setic and leach field, but the Rid-X will probably take care of it for you. You don't need to put the yeast or rid-x down each toilt as you are just trying to get the bacteria into your septic tank.

The oil should float in the septic tank. Just move up the date for your regular pump out maintenance, so you avoid problems. Normal recommended pump out is every 3 years. We go every 2 years because we live in fear of the DEP, and want to be sure we avoid any regulators or need any permits.
