View Full Version : Need bug ID please (pics)

I need to know if this is just a pod or if its something bad. I keep losing Zoos lately and I cant for the life of me find whats killing them. I have removed all of my corals and dipped them (killing a few just from the dips) and even took out all of my LR and dipped it! nothing!
Anyway here is the pics of what I found on a bag of carbon I pulled out of the back of my tank today.

for the record the two horn stick out looking things are the back end and in the rounded front end you can see two eyes if looking at it from the correct angle. I saw it moving thats how I know which is front and back.

It's a male sphaeromatid isopod. Males have large uropods (the tail fins) while females have small ones. Both sexes are harmless unlike other isopods. Learn more about them in this Reefkeeping column by Ron Shimek:

I think the key for indentifying those is to look at the eyes. If they are large and black, they are parasitic. If they have tiny eyes, they are ok.

I'm pretty sure that's what Khan put in Chekov's ear to make him talk.
