View Full Version : Interest in Calc / Kalk Reactor DIY

I expect to assemble a DIY kalkwasser reactor in the coming days, and Steve plans to build a DIY calcium reactor in the coming days. Assuming this is easy to find the parts and assemble, we have considered putting together a price list and doing a DIY project at my meting (date still not set) since the aquarium will be lacking. **If** we do this I think it will work best by me posting a total cost for the project (either calc or kalk) and anyone wanting to participate will send me that dollar amount. Once I have collected all the money I will purchase all the parts needed and make sure everything is ready to go at my place for the meeting.

Anyway, this is just in the preliminary planning stages. If this would interest you please post a reply here.

Lemme see if I have this right. At your meeting, you want to have a DIY session with power tools, AND have a keg of beer on tap? I'm programming 911 into my cell phone right now..........

don't worry bill, i've been practicing for years. we just need to hit speed dial #2 on my cell phone and the operator will answer, "what did you do now henry?"

BTW, the over-hopped 3Floyd's Alpha King is empty and replacement going on tap within moments...

Henry, any interest in a roughly 6-7' DIY counter current air stone skimmer for around $40?

I've already built mine and it works great. I'm also interested in kalk reactor.

hcs3
05/13/2006, 10:29 PM
i don't have any, but other members might.

the reason why i choose the kalk and calc reactors is because i'm building one on site weeks beforehand so i will have the reciepts, tools, and know how. it makes it easy for me to take charge of the whole project that way as i intend to buy all the plumbing pieces needed myself once i have collected the money.

if you are willing to do the same thing for your skimmer provided there is interest, not to mention be at my meeting or schedule your own DIY meeting, i'm certainly all for it.

by accident I clicked on your club instead of cora. anyway. Cora is having a kalk reactor workshop next Sunday May 21. The plans we are using is designed by Geo... He is the guy the makes Geo skimmer and reactors comercially. I am not sure if the they are going to make the plans avail. but I plan on taking some pics and such. This might an interest to your club if you don't have plans for a kalk reactor yet. check out our thread.

I built the skimmer Wed with only a few trips to menards so provided their is interest, I could just give out the part list and everyone could bring their own.

that is what i feared. with an e-mail list of 150 or so names it seems most of your providers are deleteing my incoming mail as SPAM.

i urge everyone to add the cima@insightbb.com and hcschultz3@insightbb.com e-mail address to your contacts list and your safe senders list.

So how is the reactor working out?

Are you using a pH controller to drive the CO2 solenoid?

Are you using a power head to feed the reactor? I'd rather tap the sump return line but I do not know if the back pressure is high enough

So how is the reactor working out? I have been running it for a few months now and is still working great.

Are you using a pH controller to drive the CO2 solenoid? I am not using a controller at this time. But it is easy to add it if you spend the extra $200 for it. Keep in mind that the probe should be changed at least once a year, if not sooner. I just do about 80 bubbles per min and leave it at that.

Are you using a power head to feed the reactor? I'd rather tap the sump return line but I do not know if the back pressure is high enough

I have a Mak-4 for a return pump for my system and I have it T-ed to my Ca-Reactor and have preasure to spare. Otherwise a max-jet 1200 should work fine.

Hope this helps,
-Walker
