Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself. I am Jack and i am moving to Nashville from Florida on May 12th.

I am a long-time reefer and of course, the tank is coming with me! I sold off all my lifestock (except for LR) in my 90 gal and i am starting off fresh in Nashville.

I will be living in Belleveu for about 6 months until purchasing a home. I found a store by the name of Emerald Bay, which is a mile from me. Any cooments on them? Can you recommend any other in the area?

Can't wait to join you in Nashville and start reefin' again!

Hi and welcome to Nashville. Bellevue is a pretty nice area and definitely a lot cheaper than living right in the city. I hope you enjoy. I know there are a ton of people in the club that frequent Emerald Bay and I've never had a problem with anything that I've ever bought from there. There is also the Aquatic Critter (www.aquaticcritter.com) off of Nolensville, but that will be a bit longer of a drive. Fins in Franklin (off of 65 South) also has a pretty good SW selection. I know there are a couple of others, but these are the ones that I frequent because of their selections of livestock and dry goods. Our club website has a directory of LFS in the area (http://www.mtrc.org/directory.htm), but unfortunately the site has become a bit outdated for other info on us. Your best bet is to come on RC for info about meetings and whatnot.

Welcome to Nashville. Unfortunately I am moving away soon.

Emerald bay is a good shop, and you can get a 10% discount there when you join MTRC.

I'm moving away soon also but hopefully will be back. You will love Nashville:) It's getting a little big but the people are still friendly for the most part. Good reefing community here....some really great folks. You will be out by my favorite river, the Harpeth. Don't know if you are into water other than tanks but it's a great place to canoe, fish etc.......
Emerald Bay is a great place with really nice folks. It's not overwhelming by any means but they get some nice stuff in from time to time.

fishdoc11 - My girlfriend and i have been getting into fishing, cannoeing and kayaking lately... for the past few months we have been traveling some of the parks here in south florida doing some camping... we plan on doing much more in Tennesse and will definately check out the Harpeth. Thanks for the tip.

Oh here's a question for you reefers: How are the prices of lifestock up in Nashville? do you think i should expect a huge spike? I will be traveling to South Florida for business onece a month and i guess i can do a lfs run while i am here... could i bring lifestock on a plane though?

Also keep in mind the Ocoee is only about two hours away and that river is AWESOME if you like to kayak..........also lots of other rivers in the eastern half of the state within easy driving distance plus the Buffalo and Duck rivers if you go the other way. The Harpeth would be more of a leisurely tour:)

From what I can tell livestock is about the same except for stuff that comes from FL. You can still order those things through mailorder at about the same price though if I'm not mistaken. Mobi will know more I'm sure

I think there is restrictions about transporting livestock on planes. Not sure exactly but have seen it refrenced in discusions on this board before.

The ocoee is great fun to raft, it can have some nice 4's and ocasionally a 5 on it. There is also great rivers all in a days drive of Nashville. Have all the fun before kids, somehow gonig down a river with a rapid named "the meat cleaver" or "the bus" , as in you feel like you have been hit by the bus, doesn't seem as exciting with minor children depending on you at home!! :lol:

It can be done. I know a few that have done it on numerous occasions with no issues. I'll wait to see if they post. If not, I'll ask them what they had to do special, if anything, to carry the stuff with them.

I have transported corals and fishies from PA to TN with no probs.....I hand carried them and put them through x-ray. They were in a styrofoam container and fit under my airplane seat. This was 3 years ago when I started trasporting stuff...all the initial transportees are still alive (brain, alveopora, shrooms and gobie).

We ussually meet as a club, very informal once a month at a fellow reefers home where food is ussually involved. Sometimes we have a topic for the meet or a workshop of sorts, sometimes just get together to talk tanks. About twice a year we have a meet at a local LFS where we enjoy coral fragging demoes and the members get the frags and a nice discount that night typically. We have had a couple group buys on salt which is a huge help for those of us who go through tons of salt (like me) and I think all the local LFS's give club members a 10% discount all the time on purchases.
Getting to know people with a like intrest is wonderfull and trading frags among each other is a great way to fill a tank cheaper with more variety and coler than going straight LFS and not going online. SOme members have been doing it a long time and have nice colections you don't find on the shelf every day. We all frequent the local stores and encourage the members to support them also as they are great sponsers and supporters of our club.
MTRC hosts a anual frag swap in January (for the past 2 years anyways) along with lots of other clubs within driving distance. This is a great way to pick up the more unusual frags. You do not have to be a member to enjoy the frag swap or talk on the board or even come to a meet but it its benifits well outweigh not being a member, like the 10% discount.
Oh, and dues are $20 a year and pro rated from January for the remainder of months in the year. I am pretty sure this is how it works anyways... You can go to our website and download a application and mail it to Gflat (Gary Flatness) he handels all the accounting. Or bring it to a meet. You will recive a laminated card stating you are a member.

Yup. The proration is only done on a semi annual basis, though. In January, dues are $20 and in July, dues are $10. I'm trying to get all memberships on a simpler schedule, instead of trying to track when someone's exact memebership were to end, etc. With dues as low as have them and the benefits of being a member, I figure it's really a wash in terms of cost. If you spend $200 in a year or $100 in half a year at a LFS, you've made your money back with the 10%...

Sounds great! I will join in about 2 weeks when i get up there.

Will anyone be selling any livestock in the next few weeks... as you heard i sold off all of mine except for rock and substrate and will be needing to start from scratch.

I might have a slight spike although i plan on trasporting my rock and sand completely submerged and shoul take me 2 days of transit. What do you guys think?

Please let me know.. i am interested in LPS and softies... although, it might not be a bad idea to make the switch to sps since i am starting from scratch.

Transporting them in large 70 quart coolers worked great for me. I put all the livestock in 1 quart gladware contaners, and cut slits in them. I stacked them 3 high by 4 wide, then filled the cooler with tank water. I put all the rock in 2 other coolers, and put just enough tank water in to cover the rock. I duct taped the coolers shut, then put them in the back seat of my car. I timed the whole thing from teardown to setup, and it took 15 hrs from Orlando. I would recommend using new saltwater when you setup, rinse all the detrius from your rock with the old tank water. once you place all your rock and get things arranged right run a canister filter to remove all the debris from the water column. another thing you may want to do to help expedite the process is taking all your equipment off of your tank the night before, and run a small hang on filter that way you have less time dissasembling the tank.

When the whole process was said and done, I had no visual effect on anything. no losses, and nothing damaged. I carrired some SPS, LPS, and a ton of softies. I also brought a clam, shrimp, and a Blue Linkia.

I found the LR down there to be a lot cheaper than up here... And you do find a lot better prices on line, but then theres the shipping... I bought about 40 lbs of LR when I was down near Clearwater and packed it in a cooler and hauled it up and its the best LR I have... Hmmm, there may be a difference in Knox LFS and Nashville LFS though... I'm closer to Knox... But I must say that when I go back down in the Fall I'll probably be bringing back twice as much LR as I did this time... There's good fishing and canoeing on the Caney Fork... I go there a couple times a year even though there's plenty of rivers closer to this side of TN... Good luck with the move...

Randy - I think i am set for now on LR but i think that you are right about getting better quality at better price here in florida.

Well i started to break down my tank and wrapped my 30 gal sump with 1" styrofoam sheets... i plan on doing the same with my 90gal RR. The tanks will be transported in an ABF (http://www.upack.com/default.asp) container carrier that i will load personally. Do you guys think that wrapping the tanks is overkill? any advice?

Pre-Welcome to Nashville and MTRC! Nashville is a great city. Its nice having pro-sports here now. Not too big of a city though.. just big enough. One great reef club and some decent LFS. The LFS here I always find honest and not out for just the sale. Its also nice having 2 good public aquariums within 3 hours drive and the largest in the US 4-5 hours away. I still wish Nashville had one for its own.

Overkill?? Does that exist when moving a tank? ;)
The styrofoam sounds good. Maybe wrap some cardboard sheets around the styrofoam sheets. Then wrap that it in huge blankets taped on. Finally ride in the back of the truck hugging it to stop all vibrations that could possibly cause a stress fracture 10 years from now. OK.. maybe thats overkill. :D I have moved tanks many times. Not FUN and never as far as you are going. Atleast you don't have livestock to worry about.

Platax88, "ya'll" aint nothin. When "youins cominover or not?" (youins/ustedes: you all) comes out of your mouth, you will do a double take. Hasnt happened to me since leaving Miami in 92 but my kids say it and I think nothing of it. We're over here in hillbillie E. TN though.

What is bringing you to Nashville? I absolutely love the city and the people are great too! Are you planning on moving your tank?

I just broke mine down yesterday ... that was fun :( I got all my rock and sand in rubbermaid conatiners ... it's so depressing but i am excited to start again in Nashville.

I am planning on joining MTRC when i get there. Seems like they have some great members, you should join too!

Real estate is just outrageous in Port Saint Lucie and things lined up at the same time that lead us in the direction of Nashville. I have always loved that city and we'll be visiting a few times to get things squared away as far as housing, jobs, schools, etc.

I'm bringing my tank, but I think I'm going to have my best friend hold onto the corals and fish until I recycle the tank, then have one of the LFS's ship them up to me and try my luck! I want to buy a young pair of black & white perculas from a breeder in Tampa, but I really need to decide if I want to worry about stressing them out during the move. I'm only taking my 24g NC and possibly my 12g NC with me. I won't set up a larger tank until I get settled in...or I see a deal that is just irresistible. haha I just broke down my bigger tanks and I completely understand your pain. :)

I was a member of PBMAS down in Palm Beach up until this year, because my schedule conflicted with meetings. I figured I'd start lurking and getting familiar with everyone in MTRC to see if it's the place for me. I miss having a bunch of like-minded people to talk reefs with. :)

It's funny/strange how I keep having "ties" to this thread. My brother lives in Port St Lucie. He literally bought a couple acres of swamp land with a very nice house on it (outrageously priced). But it's a beautiful secluded place to sit in a screened in porch and watch the sunset and listen to alligators starting to call to each other.

FWIW stellablue there is an lfs about an hour north of here that breeds clowns and has black and white perculas....that's where I got mine:)

Squeak, he probably lives near by. The town is only like seven miles in any direction, haha. It's a beautiful area, but I'm a 26-year-old single mom...$300k for a base model home...yeah, not feelin it. :)

Kimber, i feel your pain ... That is one of the reasons around my move as well... In Miami/Ft. Lauderdale its even more expensive!

I am looking to purchase a home in 6 months. I have looked at plenty of homes around the 200 - 250K range that are beautiful! I am just renting for a few months to really get to know the neighborhoods and the city before commiting to a purchase. Of course, i love the Franklin and Brentwood area but that is more expensive.

I have been looking at some beautifull places in Antioch and recently in Smyrna, which is a bit farther away from the city...

What do you guys think about these neighborhoods? Any others you recommend? I really want the away-from-the-city feel with some space.

Check out the West side of town...Bellevue, Kingston Springs, out to the Dickson area (thats a long commute though). There should be some secluded spots out there somewhere. Ive always liked West of town. I had a very secluded spot on top of a ridge I hated to sell. In a few years, I hope somethings there for me again :)

I will actually be renting in Bellevue for now. Some townhomes named Belleveu Heights ... i really like them. They are ontop of a woodsy hill.

I dont care about the commute as i will be working from home but my girlfriend will have to commute to Music Row.

Another booming are right now is on the north side of town (Goodlettsville, Hendersonville). There is alot of farm type land in those areas. Nashville has four quadrants that are almost equally spaced around downtown (g'lettsville to north, Bellevue to west, Antioch and Smyrna to the south(east) and Hermitage to the west-all are ~15 miles from downtown), so you can find something close, but far enough out.
