Anybody have any personal experience with Birdsnest coral? Would like to hear your pros and cons.

TIA

Don't know of any negatives. My was a small frag and has grown like crazy with no special care. I just put it near the top of the tank where it gets nice light and flow. I wish it was pink or purple instead of dull brown.

Tim - Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear you're having success. If you don't mind my asking, where did you get your frag?

dwayne,

I assume you are refering to Seriatopora Hystrix

I have a small frag that came from Dick Perrin at Tropicorium. (http://www.tropicorium.com) It was very small when I got it. If memory serves, it was a 1.5" piece, that had about 2 .5" branches coming off of it.

It is also very fragile! In the process of placing it in my tank, it fell (along with the rock it was glued on), and broke the frag in half. I glued the second half on the rock near the first. I have read that they do best when several branches fuse together to form a single large colony...

Anyways, I now have the beginings of a "birdsnest" as the branches are growing and splitting at an alarming rate. I have it about 12" from the top of my tank, under a 400W halide (not directly under) and 2X160W VHO actinic. I have noticed that the lighting definately plays an important role in coloration of this coral. The undersides of all of the branches are a funny orangish brown color and the tops, that get full light, are a beautiful bright pink in color.

Hope it helps!

Goby - My bad. I forgot to include the 'fancy' name. Yes, Seriatopora hystrix is the coral in question.

Thanks for the reply.

dwayne,

not your bad, just wanted to make sure we are talking about the same thing!

oh, and BTW, Tropicorium says that the S. Hystrix is the second only to Poscillapora Damicornis for speed of growth.

hope it helps!
