I am going to be building an enclosed hood for my 30G Cube and am going to be running a 250W MH retro. Plan on cooling with some fans but was considering enlosing the top area where the bulb and reflector will be mounted with some type of glass or acrylic shield between it and the tank. I had read on a thread somewhere that someone had done this but wanted a sanity check on it.

My storebought fixture has a fan at either end, and is glass-shielded underneath. It runs very cool---a good idea, since I set it directly on my canopy rim, which is open-air on top.

You could do a top like this

Or leave it open on top like this.
