Don't gross out the world by doing the wrong thing when you dine. Can you pass the test?

I gave up after the first question because I got it wrong and I'm chinese!!!! LOL

I was never raised that way (my grandma specifically made us eat every last bit, telling us about starving farmer's kids, etc). So I asked my parents if they've heard of it, and my dad says there are sayings like that, and then my mom said "We don't do those stupid things!!!" very adamently, which made me crack up. :)

There's actually another old Chinese wive's tale that says every grain of rice you don't finish will be a pock mark on your future spouse's face. Apparently, the idea of not cleaning up your plate (according to dad) is so that you don't shame your family by looking like you're starving. China's a big place, so we have all sorts of sayings, some wise, some not-so-wise.

6/11 on the first pass....not too bad really, especially since my nose has been buried in MBA textbooks for the last two years. At least I know some things about the world still!!

How recently did your family immigrate? I ask this because my wife's maternal grandparents immigrated from Italy. My wife told me that her mother would never cook Italian food unless it was some "Family Circle" immitation caserole. Her Mother put off all things Italian and tried to blend in to the predominant culture of the day.

26 years ago (I was born there also). We are a mix between understanding American ways, but also working hard to preserve our cultural background... I personally don't really like Western foods, but will eat them if I have to (I like Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai & Viet as my favorites).

I think the thing with China is that it is so big, it's hard to come up with single traditions that cover everyone. North China & South China are almost like different cultures.

I'll eat anything once. If it doesn't smell bad.
