I have a 55 gallon that I am going to setup soon. I measured the stand and only hav 10 inches of wide to go for a sump underneath. Could I make one? I am pretty mechanically inclined. Or can I find one for cheap somwhere.

like me, you are tight on space.
I couldn't fit a 10 gallon aquarium... I only have about 9 inches....
The first question: how much do you want to spend. To do it right would be to have one custom made for you.
but that's mucho $$
Or you could look into a wet/dry system that you could convert into a sump... or leave it as is depending on what you plan to keep in your tank...
Check out premiumaquatics.com and look at their wet/dry & sump selections.

The first one is 8" wide, and the second is 10"
just besure you can fit that 10" in the stand... it may be very tight....
Try to fit the 10" if you can.

Wont I have to modify it, I want to have the protien skimmer, heater, and Try to cut it in half for a ref. Or Is that going overboard

yes, that is correct.

apparently they are just a plain ol' sump.... they will drill whatever size hole and install bulkhead for the return... but it looks like there aren't any compartments.
see:

you could modify it... but I would pratice with some scraps first
