Well I finally broke down and ordered a skimmer for my tank. It is a Coralife Super Skimmer. The description says that it can go in the sump or hang on the back of the tank. Will the performance be the same either way? Does is require stabilizing or will it just sit in the bottom of my sump? Thanks!

Given the choice most prefer to put equipment out of sight in the sump.

the performance will be the same...but only if your sump flow is right

Jentbow, that is what I do not understand. I thought that the pump for the skimmer would handle the flow. What does sump flow have to do with it? Thanks in advance.

well if your sump is not moving enough water then the water in your sump would be over skimmed and the water in the tank would be underskimmed....you need to make sure your sump is moving at least as much water as your skimmer

I see. Thanks. It is being delivered today so I will check it out to see if it will even fit in my sump.

Jentbow, do you think im ok in my tank. I have a 29gal with a 15gal sump that is filled about 10gals worth. I have a mag7 return but the ball valve is turned a little over half way. I have an Aquatic Systems Protein Skimmer with a Maxi-jet 1200 on it. I never thought about it before, do you think im ok?

Also, if you do put it in the sump, make sure its in an area where the water level is constant. If it is changing as water evaporates, your skimmer will work poorly.

i imagine so....MJ1200's don't move much water, and they move even less when working on a skimmer. But depending on your head it could be close, I would just try to open your ball valve a little more to be on the safe side (if it were me).
