Aquapod 12g sponge or no sponge??

Should i leave in the sponge in the compartment 1 or just get rid of it? Also i heard that it's a better idea to get rid of it but what is cleaning the water if i do so?

I left mine in for the first 6 weeks then took it out. I blocked off the lower water inlets in the first chamber, (skims the water better), 2nd chamber fission skimmer, 3rd chamber is chemi-pure! So far so good!
Added my first coral yesterday. Also have a 6 line plus my clean up crew.
