I'd get a minivan, a Honda Odyssey.

Remember, gas could be $5 a gallon by summer for all we know.

Considering todays gas prices, I couldn't afford any thing listed above. I would go with something more economically friendly. All in all, if I had to choose between the two, I would keep the quad cab for hauling aquariums and such around

we will also have another car for the wife, but i want something fun for me, that she can drive when the weather is bad. gas is going to bad with the truck or the H2, so that really doesnt bother me.

The redesigned X5 will be out as a 2007 model :D .....though you'd have to wait about a year. :(

Unless you have a huge family, that truck should fit them all fine. I know I can fit at least 4 nine year olds across the back seat of my truck. Trucks these days are just as family friendly as anything else.

yodawagon
01/26/2006, 05:22 PM
im concerned with safety first, then comfort. i have subwoofers in my dodge, which i was going to take out, until the sales man said if i left them with the truck, he would put 2 monitors and DVD players in the head rests. ill never be able to watch them, but might be nice when the kids get older.

Well, if safety 1st, comfort second and fun 3rd for a family vehicle then Honda Odyssey should be at the top of the list.

If fun is more of a priority and cost is no object then go for the H2.

yodawagon
01/26/2006, 05:41 PM
cost is some what of a object, but after baby is here, spending money for fun stuff will stop. so i figured get myself a H2, the biggest toy there is, and then focus on family finances. i saw a show about minivan safety, every import failed horrably.

How old is the truck?
I drive my cars usually until I have 100k or more
I like not having a payment
Bought an 05 Flareside F150 ext cab, nicely outfitted end of June
My Isuzu only had 83k on it, but we needed a truck
7 months later....I have just over 1400 miles on it :)

yodawagon

on star is nice to have also. heated seats, leather, dual climate control, sun roof, seating for 7. did i mention i had two dogs.... a american bulldog that weighs 135 pounds, and a young boxer that weighs 50 pounds and is still growing. almost need a SUV if we all want to go somewhere.

I'd be more for keeping the Ram than anything...but if you're looking for other types of SUV's, why not the new Jeep Commander with a Hemi. Also, if you're willing to wait, SVT (Ford's go fast edition) is coming out with a blown SportTrak. Four doors, room for 5, and 0-whatever in less time than it would take you to blink.

As for the H2, they are nothing but double priced Tahoe's...trust me, there's a reason why GM's having financial difficulty. :thumbdown

Better not watch that show anymore. Odyssey gets 5 stars from in safety from NHTSA. see crash test result of Odyssey here (http://www.automotive.com/2005/12/honda/odyssey/safety/)

Holy crikeys, the Odyssey has more recalls (http://www.automotive.com/2005/12/honda/odyssey/recalls/index.html) than a Ford Explorer with Firestones...besides, I here they take out your testosterone when signing the papers on minivans ;) :p

THat Commander is just butt ugly tho. It looks like an old Jeep Cherokee climb on top of a Land Rover Discovery...

I'd go with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. You can't get more family friendly than that, it's got all the whistles, V8 for towing, lots of room, etc etc.

I had to make the same choice, and I figured I'd hack off my jimmies with a rusty spoon and toss them in a pile of salt before I would drive around in a minivan...

i have to agree, that commander is the ugliest thing on 4 wheels. i assure you , the H2 is NOT a tahoe. its frame is rumored to be borrowed from the tahoe, but its not. its kind of a hybrid of GMs heavy duty line. with barrowed technology from the 2500,3500 and freight line.

Go for what your heart desires, which is the H2. IMO they are the most impractacle cars on earth. But so is my NSX. Go for it!!!!

What's wrong with Tahoes? :D Ok, mine is a Yukon same thing. I don't get the draw of H2's anyway. Those small windows would drive me crazy. Remind me of a Brinks truck. I say keep the car you got.

I only watched the beginning, and only one of those was a Jeep. The Lion's back part where that truck come down so fast was a CHEVY. A woman was driving it (her husband's truck) when the brakes failed.

ANd no I'm not saying it was a woman driver!!!

Well it seems as if this is an American car only thread. :D To me it looks as if the Tahoe/Yukon XL would suit you the best with all room you seem to need. If you want to go "bling-bling" then go Denali XL, my sister has one and the handling is great for a truck that big. Parking is awesome with 4WS. One more thing.....in CA, the H2 is a soccer mom car, so if you ever plan on going there... :p

When the H2 first came out, they invited Arnold Schwarzeneggar (sp?) to South Bend to take it around Hummer's own test site. He ripped a front wheel off of one. What a pu$$y *** piece of machinery.

That aside, I am a valet for St. Elmo Steakhouse here in Indianapolis. I drive everything. I've driven the H2, and find that there is literally no visibility, it's slow, and it's hard to park. Unless your parking garage is 7 feet tall, forget it. You can't see teh front corners, the back corners, or really anything. It's hilarious watching someone get out of double parking one - they stop when they're about 3 feet from the car ahead of them and back up. Why? they think they're goig to hit the car, because they can't see anything. IMO, they're dangerous because you're so blind in it.

If I were to get a family friendly SUV that's bigger, I'd get a suburban or tahoe. if you like the Ford side of things, go with an Exploder. Anything bigger is just a waste.

Of course, if I were you, I'd go with a Dodge Magnum. It's like an SUV, but faster!

Minivan's are evil.

Don't buy the H2. I view lots of traffic fatalities (my roommate is a trafffic homicide investigator). Driving what you think is a tank is not going to make you safer, trust me.

I came very close to buying an H2 2 years ago and am so glad I didn't. As another poster said they are the ultimate yuppie mobile, not practical, sluggish and fuel economy is non-existent. I went with a VW Touareg which performs as well as an H2 (my license tag is (H2S NV ME) is outfitted much better, gets better mileage and not everyone and their brother has one. If you really want to be cutting edge checkout the Range Rover Sport. It is an upscale LR3 and if you get the supercharged model (390 HP...as much as my M5) it will rock your world. Wanna go all out get the Range Rover supercharged. Gorgeous but at 93K out of the reach of all but the very well heeled.

As far as the Odyssey I got one for my wife earlier this year and it really is a great vehicle. GPS is better than mine, rides better than the older models, and has the ability to run on 3 cylinders at highway speed to improve fuel economy.

01/28/2006, 12:56 AM
well as far as minivans go, i wouldnt drive one. theres just too many alternatives now a days. as far as them de-masculining you, i have to stick up for the dads. it takes a real man to drive a minivan. ive seen some huge trucks around here, and the sorriest looking guy usually falls out. you may think your the toughest , manliest man that walked the earth, but until you've fathered a child, you havent proven your manhood. as i get older, i notice that the guys i respect the most, and view as "men", are the guys at the store with babies and wifes, and minivans or SUVs. its stange, cause i havent noticed that before. but if you think about it, you could be hung like a horse, built like a tank, and popular with the ladies, but if you havent proven your balls are worth anything, your not in the same class as fathers and grandfathers.
dont get me wrong, im not saying you need to be a dad to be a man, think of it as a man to the second power.

so anyways back to the truck/suv dillema. the wife will get a new family car as well. she likes the pacificas and magnums. so this H2 is for me, and the family. not a primary family car. sure their big, and slower then some cars, and use alot of fuel, and blah blah blah. but so do most SUVs. i went and looked at the new 2007 tahoe today. its nice, but nothing great. its nicer then say a 2006, but its no H2. after all the features i like, and taxes, its not much cheaper then the H2. i dont know, i still have a while to think.

yodawagon
01/28/2006, 01:02 AM
where i come from, VW touaregs and range rovers are yuppie mobiles. the area i live in actually gets snow, and plow service is usually a day late. so people actually have suvs, H2, tahoes, trucks, and all wheel drive vehicles. if i lived in LA, i would never buy a SUV.

ah, toureg. that is sexy. the new audi q7 might be worth looking into.

yodawagon
01/28/2006, 01:06 AM
audi Q7 are for yuppies also. H2s get bought by yuppies alot i think because of the price...instant status symbol. the way i see it, if im paying 50,000+, i better get alot of SUV for it.

mickey85
01/28/2006, 10:25 AM
Personally, the thing that makes me sad is that 99% of the SUV's on the road today will never get used for what they were designed to do...OFFROAD! I was driving a brand new X5 last night, and I'd be willing to bet that that vehicle will never, ever even see a dirt road. I guess it's just upsetting to a guy that lives on a dirt road, pulls tree stumps out with his pickup trucks, and goes muddin' and rock crawling with a stock 83 CJ7.

I almost bought a H2, if I had to buy again, I would buy a Yukon Delani. Instead I bought a 05 chevy avalance.

Consider getting the baby in and out of the vehicle. We actually take our Yukon off road, no major hill climbing tho. If I had small kids, I'd go for a Suburban, which is what I had, when my kids were small. The only people that have H2's here are rich old people.

I like my 2002 Yukon XL 4x4 nice and roomy (seats 7, not counting the driver) with lots of cargo plus it's decent on gas considering. It's 2.25$ a gallon here in S. Jersey.

i really like the 2007 suburban. but have no idea how much they will cost when they are released. if they are comparable to the 2006, after all the options i want, i might as well buy the H2.

04 Yukon XL owner have taken it on many trips. Comfortable, 3 kids in back have lots of room to stay away from each other. Plus if you are a real 4x4 guy I like the way it handles snow and ice. Mud different story thing is to heavy. Still I miss my Ram had three of them till the went to the new recent body style. You can't get a 1/2 ton with a solid front axle anymore great for off road fun. Saving up to buy another ram 3/4 diesel
