Is there such a thing as too big a refugium? (Planning a 9g for my 20g tank!)

And...what's the recommended turnover rate for refugiums? The powerhead I'm looking at will do something like 100gph, so 10 times an hour...is this ok? I'm not sure I can buy a smaller one!

Hasty,

IMO you can never have too big of a refugium.

Sounds like your planned water flow is too much. You want very low flow through a refugium. Something in the 20 gallons per hour would work fine in your set up.

Too big... LOL! :D You will always wish for more...you'll see!

I agree with the lower flow and turn over rate.

Well ok....does anyone know of a 20gph pump, then? All I can find are big ones!

Use a powerhead or MiniJet pump.

Or....if you have a sump, you can 'tee' off your main circulation line and use a gate valve to control the output.

Minijet sounds easiest, as I don't have a sump.

Ok, looks like I"m in business then :)

Thanks guys!

Julian Sprung once had a 5gal nano reef with a 60gallon sump/refugium. :eek1:

lol.....I have discussed things like sumps with my family, and they always say, why didn't you use your 55g for the tank in the first place? Because then I'd need 4 times as much rock, do you know how expensive that is?? :D

Sump is my next project, but right now I've got a scooter blenny who would love me forever if I can get him off the mysis shrimp diet and back onto copepods fro m the 'fuge :-)
