Andy (saltwaterfishlover) got his first MH400 today. When he plugged it in, it was louder than the fishtank with this annoying hum! Are they supposed to be loud, or is one brand quieter than others? I can't imagine the sound of 2 MH running, it may make me postal!!!!!

Most of us use either PFO, Icecap, or "F-can" type MH ballasts. Never heard any of those hum, though I've read about some types doing it, so maybe do a search on the main board. I have the last one mentioned, with is a normal ballast encased in a metal box filled with "tar". It cost a little more than a normal coil and cap setup, maybe it's to make it quieter?

Hey! I'm running 2 175W icecaps and they are quiet
But I had a 250W MV running a 6500K Iwasaki bulb
That would hum until it was warmed up
If that helps any

Make sure its in a grounded outlet that fixed my friends buzzing ballast problem.

I work in a MH lit warehouse, and they do HUM.
My blue-line ballasts are silent and cool, however.

We plugged it into a grounded plug today and it was quieter, thanks for the idea Pat.
