Could be very well true...but I know protein skimming happens naturally in freshwater rivers so I could only assume it helps at getting wastes out. Could be wrong :)

Protein skimmers in fw tanks dont work very well unless the water is VERY hard and even then they dont work as well as they do in SW.

It would probably be great for aerating the tank though. But I guess an air pump and limestone diffuser would do the same thing.

Protein skimming (foam fractionization) doesn't work for freshwater tanks. You can use a bubble wand or other airstone if you need to blow off excess gasses, though it won't do much to increase your O2 content.
To reduce maintenance..... well..... that would involve taking the tank down. ;-)

Sorry guys but I hate to say this isn't true...I have found numerous companies that create protein skimmers for freshwater systems. Just to name a few :
http://www.schuran.com/freshwater/abschaeumer_e.html
http://www.tmc-ltd.co.uk/commercial/freshwater-skimmers.asp
Unfortunately me looking for a used protein skimmer may be a no go since it seems there is an engineering difference in both types.
