I was wondering with all of the debating about what needs to be in the tank. What are the main needs for a 2.5 gallon tank hosting 1 goby. Also have 3lbs of Live Rock and a pump. Please feal free to hit me hard :eek1:

It really depends on what type of goby you got in there.

But I'd say - Water changes, water changes and more water changes.

I have a 2.5 with a shrimp/goby pair. Other than the occassion feeding, water changes and top off are the only needs.

I would say you mainly need water, some rock and a bucket.

Well I think LR rubble is a good addition . It's small enough to be placed anyway you'd like with the added filter benefits . I've got a 5 gal. with LR rubble and a perc. false perc that I've had for almost a year now and he's very active . He stays in his bowl except for when it's supper time then he taunts my cat who loves to watch him eat . Yes I do water changes about a gallon every 3 weeks or so and it works for me . HTH

Didn't me and dwayne tell you in your other two threads that a Goby wouldn't be fine in your tank?

Andrew chill dude,
He CAN keep a goby in a 2.5 if it's a small one. Heck at one point I had 4 neons in a 2.5 and I've even kept a bta in a 2.5. As long as he keeps up with water changes and top off he can do it and do it successfully. I been doing it for 3 years now.

2.5g
millinium filter mini filled with rubble
4x9w pc lights
fan
timers that's it in mine

Now if you want to rag on some one go after hpmcbroom and his false perc in a 5g. Now that's idiotic. Sheesh.

what the... none of you has mentioned a heater? I know a 2.5g might be small, but you can still fit one in and need to.

We need to remind everyone that just because you can do it, it does not mean you should do it!

I had to explain to my wifes freind the other day as to why I didn't have more than two fish in my 10 gal. nano. I said to her: think if I locked you in your bedroom and told you you could never leave. But after a while I thought you looked lonely and after all it is a big room so I added 4 more people to the same room. Sure they could live, but how happy would they be?

I think you could do a small shrimp and a clown goby and be fine.
If you want more fish you need a bigger tank. It's that simple.

Such a small space might result in some dead corals if you have a clown goby...or some hardier soft corals only. A neon goby, hi-fin goby, or other smaller goby would be better. Clowns are often purchased because they are cute, but after they start killing SPS/LPS corals they get returned, if not just flushed.

Aren't clowns reef safe?

hahnmeister

clowns are, but clown gobies are so-so. They love to perch on corals and they secrete a poison that kills. They also tend to nip at SPS polyps.

In a larger tank, this tends to go without notice...but in a small tank, with a limited number of corals...their small size is misleading because their impact is that much greater.

Sorry about that - I read "clown" and stopped there....

2.5 is really small for any goby. A high fin with a small shrimp MIGHT! work but I have to agree with some of the earlier posts that this is stretching it. I have a YWG and a tiger in my 30 gallon cube and sometimes I think that if given more space to dig their tunnels they would be happier. I hove those two guys for about two years now and they are both big, I mean really big, so that might be a factor.

When I had a heater in mine, it got to hot during lights on. My tank has a fan but it couldn't keep up with the temp. I've ran this tank 2 1/2 years w/no heater and it's been just fine. I do a weekly 1/2 to 1 gallon water change. All my tanks run at night using ambient room temp and have been doing so for years. But because it works for me doesn't mean it'll work for you.

And yes I agree, just because you can do it doesn't mean that you should. I have several years behind me in keeping fowlr and I like the challenge of the smaller pico type tanks. That being said, I DO NOT believe that someone setting up sw for the first time should start with a pico. 20g fine but nothing smaller.

Russianpimp please consider a larger volume tank for your first tank. There is no margin for error in these small tanks. You have so much to learn before your going to really "get it".
