I've been struggling with this algae for months. I have gotten rid of all the other nuisance algaes I have encountered but this one plagues me.

Does anyone know what it is, and of anything that would eat it.

Here some info on my tank, suggestions for controlling this are welcome.

40G breeder, 20G fuge, 20G sump.
ER 6-1 skimmer
Geo CA reactor

Water changes, 5-10G weekly

Amm, Nitrite, Nitrate - all undetectable
Salinity - 1.026
Alk - 9.6
Ca - 425
Mg~1400
pH - 8.3 day , 8.15 night

I have reduced total photoperiod from 12hrs total w/ 10hrs MH to 8hrs total, w/ 6hrs MH

I feed approximately 1/4 to 1/8 a cube of frozen everyday or every other day.

Fish load:
flameback angel
greenbar goby
bangai cardinal

Recently added a small ~ 2" scopas tang in hopes of it helping out with control (I will get sell/trade this fish as soon as I can get this under control)

Also added a longspine urchin.

Thanks for any help.

Scroll through this algae database to see if you can find a match. http://www.saltcorner.com/sections/guest/algaepage/algaepage.htm

Yeah, i've glanced through the database, but I haven't seen this yet, or seen a good enough picture to ID for sure.

I originally wanted to try a foxface rather than tang, but the smallest one my LFS had was about 6-8".

Are there any suggestions for methods other than herbivores, apart from what i am already doing.
I also started running phosgaurd about 2 weeks ago, but have yet to see any improvement.

I did test phosphate, but levels were undetectable using a sera (all the LFS had in stock) test kit.

check your ro/di unit. sometimes you can build up alot of gunk in there and the topoff and new water has some nasties in it. an emerald crab or two could help, but i think the tang should take care of it. i really wouldnt be too concerned. thats a very attractive algae and it looks easy enough to pluck/scrub off. much better than having hair, bubble or slime algae :).

yes i thought it was attractive at first as well. Until it grew so quickly that it completely covered my rocks and you couldn't see any of my frags.
I will hang in there and try checking the TDS on my RODI. Thanks
