It's an ocypodid of some sort. Generally they are intertidal animals and won't last long fully submerged. Like almost all crabs they are opportunistic feeders.

its a fidler crab. exactly what kind i do not know but looks exactly like the ones we have around here except that yours is bring red/orange. it does need to get out on dry land every once in a while as there burrows are usually exposed during low tide. they come out of there burrows and feed on anything left in the sand as the tides recede.

is he pretty easy to catch? if so maybe you scould do a 1g container cut in half with som saltwater moisture and put him in there once in a while just to give him some time out of the water! a little rubble and some sand with enough water to keep it moist!! just a suggestion, dont know if hes really worth it?

thats a good idea tigerarmy40. if you do decide to go this route you can place some flakes on the sand in the container and let him pick them up as he goes along. also you can leave them out for more then a hour. i used to have one as a pet a while ago and i would take him out aand let hom roam around for 3+ hours sometimes without any problems.
