I've given it some thought but worried it may spread to the main tank. I have heard that some do this without that problem though and with great results as far as nutrient removal.
Any thoughts?

I haven't done this on purpose, but in one of my tanks, I'm using the built-in wet/dry filter portion of the tank as a refugium. This area is under lit, and seems to grow hair algae better than any caulerpa. I harvest the hair once a month or so, and I never have a hair algae problem in my main tank. One nice thing about hair algae, the various pods really love it (not to mention it's free:D ).
