I took all my rock out of the display tonight, scrubbed it and put it in a holding tank. After seeing what was left over in the display and what the water was like after I scrubbed it and swirled it, I now understand what happend to my tank. The amount of detritus and gunk in the display was massive.

So you think you just had too much settling on the rock and not staying in the water column? What kind of flow volume in the tank did you have?

I had two Tunze 6100's in the 120.

Mark,
Did you have sand in the tank or did that accumilate under the rocks?

Randy, Mark's tank was BB, so I assume that was all under the rock.

On a side note, I did an 80 gallon water change the other day and vacuumed my sand. You would not believe the amount of detritus I vacuumed out:eek2:

My tank was BB however this was not on the bottom or under the rock. This is what I came out of the rock as I lifted it from the tank and shook the heck out of it. So this all came out of the rock.

I am going to skim the heck out of it, keep good flow and see what happens to it in the stock tank.

First thought would be not enough flow to keep the debris from settling on the rock. But with the tunze's that may not make any sense. Maybe a turkey baster to blast the rocks off once a week in out of the way places may help or some ph's behind the rocks for possible dead zones in the tank? Had it been bb the whole time?

My thoughts are that most of this rocks came from other tanks, and was not ever cleaned or "cooked" to what they call now it now.

I am sure this is years of buildup and when I lost my skimmer it just really kicked off the start of my problems.

I would say I had enough flow, I would clean out my sump weekly of detritus. I just had to much detritus.

Makes sense. Are you cooking w/o light or lots of shaking and water changes?

I am keeping my fish alive in there with it, so I will have lots of flow, moving around of the rocks and heavy skimming. I am not really "cooking" it, but I will see if this works.

It is really nice rock, but I am not sure I am going to use it or not.

The first time I cooked my rock, I was absolutely amazed at how much detritus there is inside LR.

When I moved my 75 from my apartment, I did not reuse it. So in my house it stayed in a rubbermaid sump for about 3 months until I got the 120. I then moved it into the tank. Realizing that I did not have enough rock I purchased some from a LFS, and then I took some from a friend.

I did not clean or do anything with any of the rock.
