My friend wants to get a salt water tank. He only wants one clown and a small shrimp. Would this tank be ok for him?http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?R=6745&sku=701106&redirectURL=%2fShop%2fProductList.aspx%3fPC%3dproductlist%26Nav%3d217%26N%3d24%2520115&PC=productlist&Nav=217&N=24+115

I agree. Perhaps a small shrimp alone would do well. Not enough for any kind of clownfish though, IMHO.

Though I am new to this I would have to disagree, when my 6 gal nano cracked I replaced it with the 12 gal Eclipse, the lighting is not sufficient for corals but is fine for fish only, I have a pair of Ocellaris, a fire shrimp, hermits and a few snails. I perform 10% water changes every other week and have not had any problems, the shrimp has actually molted 4 times in the few months he has been in there.JMO though.

But he is showing a 3 gallon tank. You think that is fine for a clownfish?

Sorry about that, should have really looked at it better. Would have to agree 3 gallons is to small.

My other friend just offerd my friend a 6 gallon tank with a filter and a heater for 25 dollers. I have seen the tank and it's in mint condition. Would this be ok.

No, not really......

You're putting a fish that's going to get 3.5" long in there...... if it lives that long....

Hey gang,

Small tanks like that are fine for a limited number of inverts, especially corals, but fish need some room. We are not dealing here with goldfish that can manage under very confined environments. SW fish are almost always larger and need plenty of space. Want some leathers? A nano is fine. Want fish? Then choose a tank with some swimming space.

you got to pay to play. go bigger or dont do it. i think a lot of people on here have great luck with a 29 gallon tank. that seems to be a ok size tank on the small side. they will also not stay at 3 gallons for long, if they like it. the products available for 3 gallon tanks are probably hard to find, if they even make them. if they dont want a big tank, stick to tetras or something other then saltwater.

Have your friend read this Charlie-The New Tank Thread (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=239848).
