I'm using blue night lights from homedepot. You can get cheap sockets and plug them into extension cords, screw in the bulb, set the timer and viola, instant moonlights for under $10. Oh, that's 2 moonlights for under $10.

they have these in costco right now and i think they are $3 or so each. put on a 99 cent extension cord and voila.

it has a photosensor so when your main lights go out...they turn on automatically.

yes, they are led's.

i dont remember the name of the night light but they now come in a 5 pack.

i only use two for my 180g and it lights it up okay.

i use it for the tank inhabiatants and not for night viewing cuz...well, i am asleep at night an rarely look into the tank (if ever) during my sleep.

it really should take about 30 seconds to set up. it is just a matter of plugging it into an extension cord and the cord into an electrical socket (gfci). oh, i went the extra mile and spent another 10 seconds putting tape over the 'light lock' button to prevent moisture from seeping into it.

i rarely shop anywhere but home depot and costco...and i am not sure if home depot has these...and if they do...you can bet you ferrari modena 360 that it will be more expensive than costco.

they change colors but...

the button i taped up...press it when the color you want comes up and it locks it to that...

You can go to PepBoys or Kragen and pick up a blue neon light in the auto accessories section. The one I got was about 10.00 and it about 3" long. I hacked off the lighter plug and plugged it into a 12v power supply. I don't have it on a timer, and it has been running straight for over a year without any problems.

really? i did the same mod twice, but the blue lights lost power or something and stopped working. it was the same method that someone posted on reefcentral about a year ago.

haha its funny i have those all over the house to light when all the lights are dark so i dont bump into stuff  i dont know about rigging them up on my tank tho, one neat thing about them if you do put em near your tank is that they fade colours and its pretty neat :)

They're in the light bulb section..I bought some about a month ago to put in my canopy, but my wife took them and put them all over the house. The cool thing a bout these is that you can change the color of these...you can set them to red for nighttime viewing. The last time I went to costco, they were out:( ...I'm going to have to snag them back from the hallway!

They must be out to where I am too cause my wife checked the light and automotive areas with no luck.

That's the thing about costco, you sometimes have to jump on certain items because they don't always carry them. I missed out on their digital timers. I saw them and then the next time I went when I wanted them, they didn't have them anymore...grrr.
