graveyardworm
11/25/2005, 09:19 PM
That toadstool has doubled in size in the last 6 months, and when the current washes through the extended polyps -awesome-.
2 Weeks ago I switched out my 250 watt 10000k MH for 14000k and noticed a dramatic increase in size. Its one of the first corals I purchased.

graveyardworm nice tank can you give me any details on your setup? If I'm'm lucky maybe mine will look as good when I can finally get it going.

graveyardworm

Well first off this tank is 2 years old and it has taken that long to get to where it is. I cant say if it was a learning curve, or the time it took to gather enough equipment, or if has just taken that long to mature. I'm still having problems keeping various animal, and from the first pic to the second you can some that are missing. :(

The way the tank is setup right now:

Lighting - DIY hood 2- 250 watt MH 14000k, 2 - 110 watt VHO URI super actinic for dusk/dawn effect only they shut off when MH come on. Currently I have a box fan blowing across the top of the tank to fight heat from the MH.

Fitration - 4 inch DSB with plenum (next time no plenum), about 125 pounds homemade LR ( not sure if I'd do this again ) seeded with about 20 lbs fiji LR some of which has been removed, Amiricle hang on wet/dry bioballs removed with modified Amiricle skimmer ( supposed to be rated for 120 gal I dont think so the skimmer works poorly ).

No sump

Top off - RO/DI 100 GPD purchased from http://www.melevsreef.com/ works great, Just bought an auto top off from autotopoff.com . So far it works great and my water level hasnt fluctuated since. Highly recommend you get one it makes a huge difference.

Water changes - I change out 20 gals per week with Crystal seas marine mix salt.

I think thats about it any other questions feel free to ask.

A small piece of advice... if you plan on having an anemone, creating an island with your aquascaping has helped us tremendously. Keeps the Anemonies on their side of the tank... it's worked for us in our 90g.

Good luck,

roader, we have approx 125 lbs of LR in our main display. Our tank was just put up about a month ago with what we could salvage from Katrina. Most of the rock, couple of fish and corals we saved were in our 45g QT for the last several weeks. Wasn't until we moved 7 hours away that we put it all back together.

When are you setting yours up?

I don't think I can do it until after the first of the year still have some things to buy and I am going to replace the flooring in the living room were the 90 will be set up. I will be moving all fish and invertebrate's to the 90 and using the 75 fish only for some fresh water fish I have had for about 8 to 10 years the clown knife really needs some more space

roader247 -

thanks for starting this thread. i'm also restarting my 90 gal tank. It's currently disgusting, with plastic plants. I just started the saltwater hobby, and now that I'm a little more comfortable, I want to restart it, and do it right. Like you, it probably won't be set up until after the new year, since I need to get a couple other things. I have my sump, sand, LR, light, and skimmer ready. Just need to transport my current livestock to a smaller tank, so I can get the tank drilled.

I'll post picks once I get things up and running! (i seriously doubt you want to see what it looks like with plastic plants!)

Sorry for the lousy pics -- took them without the tripod, plus downsizing them to less than 50k really hurts the quality. Tank has been up for about 6 months. There's approximately 70lbs live rock, plus those bleached-white looking rocks are from a 60lb box of Hirocks that I added about 2 weeks ago -- starting to see some small purple dots on it, though. Need to try to get a closer pic of the whole tank.

Here's a closer up of the rock and a few critters, though (including my new Coco worm!):

Hi Biggie,

Thanks for the compliment. That light has external HQI ballasts. I do like the fixture very much though. Bright crisp white light, maybe just a hint of blue. I got it from Premium Aquatics.

Rockhead,

I'm far from an expert, but I find that if I take straight-on pictures with the flash, I get the glare right in the middle of the pic, but if you take them at somewhat of an angle to the glass, the glare is off to one side.

Better yet, don't use a flash at all, but use a tripod (or a stable platform) and a longer exposure time -- the tripod prevents the blurring from shaking the camera during longer exposures. You can even use the timer on the camera to avoid shaking when you press the button. I think using manual focus (if you have it) can help, as well.

I think there's a section on Melev's reef site called "how to take great pictures" that may be helpful (probably much more helpful than me!)

Sorry to get off-topic!!

Well, I couldn't do it so I went to the expert( WIFE) and she has a picture. This is before it's refugium, the fish are coming out very soon and going into the 150g. What do you think of wifes' first picture?

This is what I put together a month ago.

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/1/108047DSC00502.jpg

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/1/108047DSC00505.jpg

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/1/108047DSC00504.jpg

As you can see I am still coming under hair algae. These pictures are about two weeks old now. Since then, the hair algae has spread across the whole tank but has also thinned considerably as the tank is not stocked yet. I am feeding enough phyto to sustain some biological activity and have begun stabilizing my parameters (alk, Ca, Mg...)

Also, since this picture, I have added 18lbs. Aruba Puka as shell rubble. It is a bit much more than I pictured in my head so I am fine tuning it, mixing it with the sand and creating piles here and there for pod production within the tank. I have also pulled some of the smaller rocks of the top of the right pile and bridged teh top of the two large rocks on the left. It does bring the tank back to the olf rock wall look on the left, but the cave on the right offsets it and its the appropriate look for my tank's biotioe IMO.

More pics in my gallery (http://reefcentral.com/gallery/showgallery.php?thumb=1&cat=500&si=clsanchez77&perpage=24&sort=1&stype=2&ppuser=108047) and my thread (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=855667) details my plans.

I hope you all like and glad I could contribute to the same thread that motivated me.

BTW the tank is an AGA 90 48lx18wx24h with stock Mega Flow on stock stand and canopy (canopy modified for MH pendants).

Chris
