Still planning lighting upgrades on my 29 gallon. Don't know if lights, p.h's, and pumps will drive temp up too high. Lights will be 150 watts vho, and (2) 150 watt hqi's. Anybody?

Im about to add one b.c. my Tank runs at a whoping 86 degrees F. ...well at least when i have the money...and i still need to do some research on it and see which one is right/best for me....

I run a chiller on my 29 since I'm in LA. Best investment for my reef period. Well that and the controller for the stupid crappy heater.

I have a 12 gallon tank and a 3.5 gallon sump with 90 watt power quad in a closed hood and I put a Pacific Coast CL-280 1/10th horse pwer chiller.

Also, please list what is driving your temps up.

in my 20gal nano i use an Iceprob.

Do you have any fans going? I've got 2 in the canopy, 1x blowing accross the sump, and two more pushing air into the sump area since my sump is an enclosed area and that keeps humidity from becoming way too high in there. My temps are fine. What are you using for pumps? If you've got mags, I'd switch those out with Ocean Runner's or Eheims as that'll be cheaper than throwing down the money on a chiller and the power bill for a chiller.

I've got 1x 175W SE MH and 2x 55w PC's. + a mag 3 on my skimmer.

i got a 150watt MH and 2 fans in it. also have a heater in the tank and ice prob in the fuge. keeps it at 78.6 in the tank

Are you kidding me? Theres no reason to add a chiller to a nano, waste of money. Use fans instead. Point them at the waters surface and you'll increase evaporation. More evaporation = lower temperatures.

If you have MH lighting, leave your canopy's top (and back if possible) open. I have 380w of lighting on my 40g reef with about 400w of other equipment in the tank. I don't have to use fans or a chiller to keep my temperature at 80º. All the heat goes up through the canopy.

Yeah, I have a fan blowing on the surface of my tank, and during the summer it helped bring a 90+ shocking day to an 82 all the time temp. Lots of evap though.

Ditto! The evaporation/surface agitation of a Nano's water dramatically decreases temperature compared to a larger tank.

I used to use fans only, but I felt like every summer something bad would happen. Hot 90 degree+ southern cali days, forget to open the windows, or whatever. Something would always happen, and my tank would over heat and I'd lose some livestock. What a bummer. Plus the evap sucks.

So now I have a chiller and a small fan on my 18g tall w/70w mh and 75w vho in an open canopy. The chiller hasn't been on in a while due to the cooler weather, but I feel ready for the next summer.

Plus one of the main things to success is stability. And having a constant set temperature, using a temperature controller is great!

I have a 1/4 Arctica titanium on my 29 that has a 400w SE bulb, 130 w of PC's and a mag 9.5, 2 mag 7's and a few other random pumps. Needless to say without the chiller, my tank is a toasty 99.3. Chiller keeps it at 78.3

swimaway: how could you possibly fit all of that in/over a 29! let alone justify it!

I'm using a 1/10hp chiller on my 24g cube. I tried the fan method at first but living in a super dry climate caused my tank to lose too much water in 24 hours. My tank is a lot more stable now with the chiller and the corals show it.

I'd love to see some pictures of your tank.

I use a Pacific Coast 1/10 chiller for my 29g that runs 250w DE MH.

1/10 HP chiller here w/ 250W DE MH. Fans will help, but in the middle of summer it won't be enough for me.

30 gal cube with a single 150w mh and during the winter its stable at 79-80 with the lights on. in the summer or warmer months the chiller ( 1/5 hp artica) keeps the tank at 81.. with all the money i have spent on my tank, i would not risk not having a chiller. once i get my canopy built i'll be adding 2 fans into the mix
