I'm still battling this cyano bacteria. Here's my specs:

1) 55 gal reef tank - 9 months old
2) Water parameters are fine
3) Light period - 2-65 watt PC actinic - 12.5 hours
2-65 watts PC white - 9.5 hours

Please let me know what else must I consider to get rid of this red stuff on my sand bed.

If you want to help it out a bit try cutting down the light a bit. I had the same problem with my first tank for awhile. I had my lights on for 10hrs and when I was told to cut it down to 8 the cyano went away withing 24 hrs. Also try putting more flow at the area where there is a lot of cyano.

for a tank your size I'd go with two seio 620 or 820 but its its big so you cant really hide it. MJ 1200 are a lot smaller so you may want to take a look at that also.

red slime remover works, but watch it, it made some of my corals brown out... they have since got all their color back, cyano never came back.

I just had a bad breakout myself, but I refuse to use anti-biotics (red slime remover/etc) in my tank, because of the potential damage to the good bacteria. Skim more, change water more, grow more macro algae, run carbon, and remove as much as you can manually. I used a turkey baster to clean the stuff off the rocks, and used filter socks to skim the surface anywhere the slime had accumulated. After about 2 weeks, it is finally under control.

Best of Luck.

how often are you feeding phyto to your tank? I had the same problem and I cut back about 75% and it's all gone

I feed mine every other day with PhotoMax. Should I also cut to say once a week?

Sometimes this stuff just wont go away not matter what you do. I fought it on my 150 for a few months and nothing seemed to matter. One does of "Red Slim Remover" took care of it...Be warned. Have plenty of water made up for WC and turn off your skimmer.

Oh yeah, remove as much as you can before you does it, if you dose it.

So your PC's are 9 mos. old?
It may be time to replace the bulbs.
Also, The actinics can be cut back.
For PC's I'd suggest 10 Act and 8 - 9 hours of daylight.

I replace my PC's every 8 mos, and my halides every 12 mos. I only run the halides for 7 hours a day.
