I am planning on upgrading my 55 gal to something larger. Right now I have the tek 6 bulb t5's, 36'' x 15''. The largest standard tank I can get is a 65 gallon tank 36''x18''x24'', that the light will fit over. I hang my T5's from the ceiling. Anyways what do you think the potential lighting problems would be if say I bought a standard 75 gallon 48''x18''x21''? Could I offset the light so that it didn't hang over 6'' on each side. Then keep softies, zoos, and shrooms in the darker areas...as of right now in my 36'' I don't have any corals sps, or lps on the outer 6'' of each side yet. I don't have the money to get a tank, larger skimmer, and new lighting. I can swing the tank, and probably the skimmer if my current skimmer can't keep up. And I do need a new tank. My tank is 10+ years old, and if I had to guess I would guess 15+ yrs old. So rather than tempt the fates it may just be time to upgrade regardless if I am only gaining 10 gallons of water. Though if the consensus is that the lighting would work on a 75 gallon then I would obviously go in that direction.

I would just center the light so it looks nice and use the edges for the low light stuff
