The entire time I've had my reef tank up and running I've used 175W 10K Hamiltons. I had no idea what type of lighting I needed to start with. I just new I needed these Metal Halide things in order to keep some of the livestock I was dreaming of. (I also new that is was one hell-of-an expensive light fixture for some fish and coral.) As you know, for many reasons, you can't tell by the photo's posted on the web how a tank will look with certain bulbs...so I just said what the hell and bought some 14k 175w Hamiltons ($69 on their web site. $89 at the LFS).
Personally, I couldn't be happier. I think the tank looks awesome. Very crisp with, to me, not too much blue which was the one thing I was worried about. I'm hoping they will help me get the most color out of my sps. We'll see. JMO.
