questions about using ROWAphos in a phosban reactor

I am about to hook up my phosban reactor and use some Rowaphos as media. Question:
Do I have to put the rowa in a filter sock, or are the foam pads the phosban reactor came with sufficient?

Just put it in as is and lower the flow rate because of the smaller grain size by using the ball valve. Lower it to where it just tumbles and doesn't float to the top.
