How can you incorporate an inline heater into a closed loop that would effectively heat the water but as well not substantially impact water flow.

The hydor inline heater has a 1/2" - 5/8" inlet and outlet.

There are some inline heaters that you might be able to adapt to your plumbing but from what I've seen they're for smaller tanks. You may have to add one to each side of the output for a larger tank or if you have a sump, simply put it in there.

Lifegard makes inline heater modules that could be used with a closed loop. They have a 1 1/4" inlet and a 1" outlet. They can be used with any standard-sized heater.

You could always use one of those T like PVC peices (the ones that are slanted) and use a ball valve to control the flow into the heater and then back into the closed loop return.
