I am undecided between a standard 55 gallon tank and a 46 gallon bow front. I was wondering if the Bacpack (protein skimmer/ filter) enough filtration in a reef aquarium of either size, or is a refugium required (i know it would help), but is it really necessary.

You'd be a lot happier spending the few extra bucks on a Aqua C Remora.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to the Aqua C remora? I have not really seen nor heard of them, but i am also very new to this.

if you are going to buy a aqua c than buy a coralife
if you going to buy the coralife than get a deltec

The Bak Pak is fine for your tank. I use one and love it. It always amazes me that everyone wants to post but not answer your question.

I've seen the backpack and remora in action and I would say get the remora.
Some have trouble adjusting the coralife, it can be a pain.
No need to spend all that $$ on a deltec either.
There is no adjusting on the remora, and it pulls alot of skimmate from the water.
You don't need a refugium, yes it would help, but definitely not necessary.
Sumps are good in that you can place the skimmer, heater, etc.. and have it hidden.
hope this helps

I had a Seaclone on my 30g, it worked well. Switched to a Remora thinking it could be better. It wasn't. Moving tank to new 50g with sump. This time went with ASM G2. Much much better. Get an in-sump skimmer.

My bak pak works well on my 75, but 75 is as big as I would ever want to use it on. Should be fine for 40 -60 gallons.
