I've got a mess of pipes running to my garage and have been looking for something weather proof to wrap them with any suggestions?

The foam insulation is much too small and I'm trying to avoid building something around it as some of the pipe is going to be burried.

you can try a heat wrap that is plugged into standard 110v outlet to keep pipes from freezing.. the name of the product escapes me right now and that is the best description i can give but i am sure you get what i am talking about at least i hope you do.

Will have to look in to that, thanks.

I've seen some form of inground insulation before, designed to be burried in the trench. May be more of a specialty product.

You can also use PVC Sched 80 (almost double the thickness). But look at your local hardware place for heating duct insulation or stuff designed for airconditioner piping. They often have large foam pieces.

Too late for the sched.80 but I'll see what I can find in the way of ducting insulation.

Mike- How deep are the pipes going to be?

If pipe insulation is to small, it seems one could use two peices on overlapping pipe insulation to cover the pipe diameter and then secure with waterproof tape.

Paul- They go down a good foot but only a small section is being burried. It's a 40' run and only the last 4' or so goes under the sidewalk. I'd like to insulate the whole thing.

Saltz-I've got two 3" inch lines and one 2". The 3"ers are stacked on top of eachother and the 2" runs between them on the outside. All are pretty snug up against my exterior wall. The foam pipe insulation is unfortunately not even close in diameter.

mike- I will ask my plumber friend and get back to you.

Thanks Paul. Jeff's idea was neoprene which sounded great but 1. I don't know where to get it and 2. it might be a little too pricey.

At WallyMart they sell mansize neoprene/foam camping pads for putting under sleeping bags. I don't know the cost though.

That sounds pretty good. Will have to check it out.
