Short of running a reactor...does anyone have an opinion on Phosphate media for my canister. There are a bunch of brands!

I hear ecophos is very good. It is an iron based phosphate remover, but it needs to be use slowly. As it can remove it to quickly

just make sure you read the label that it does not re release the phospate when its full. I like kent. You can bake it and reuse it.

An GFO is good. Phosban, Rowaphos, Phoslock, ect...They all work through bonding and are iron based and wont re-release any P04. I run a teaspoon full in my fluidized filter and change it once a week on my 40. This keeps a steady undeteactable level.

Thanks guys...so a little bit goes a long way? I was thinking about dropping a small bag into my canister to run alongside my carbon.

What Ben said...any type of granular ferric oxide or hydroxide (a wetter substance) will work. You need to be very careful not to run large amounts of it though. Doing so can cause your ALK to drop quickly. Basically just follow the instructions and you should be fine.

And running it in your canister filter would be fine.

I have experienced the lowering of alk while running phosphate binders. Just a heads up

how much did you use ? In what size system?

did you have a lot of phosphates when you started ? (large amounts of algae - or a test kit result?

I have used seachem and rowaphos.. both worked good. I use seachem now every couple weeks I will run it just for good measure.
