I'm setting up a new 75 with a 40 breeder sump. Have 2" of very fine sand, a couple of pounds of live rock rubble, and a handful of Cheatmorpha. I have one of Melev's Home Depot PC bulbs on it. I started to get an algae film on the sand, and thought it might be good to put some snails and hermits in. Should I?

What else do you put in your fuge?

I have about 10 nassarius snails in mine along with 2 fighting conchs. Nassarius keeps sandbed shuffled and conchs nibble on my detritus. I have also put crabs in at times, but am currently going crabless on tanks

Fuges are notorius for accumulating detritus. You don't need sand or rock at all. Keep it BB and keep chaeto only. Pods breed in chaeto extremely well.

So is "no sand" really the way to go?

I got 2" of LS on mine with 15lbs of rock, cheato 8 mangroves, feather caleurpa, 1 cuke 1 brittle star 1 conch and snails, turbo and cerith, it's been running for 1 1/2 year i'm also using a micron sock which I replace often so my sump and fuge are pretty clean.

This is what I have done, but i'm still getting detritus settling out at the bottom. Whats the best way to remove it? Also, I think this is a good idea because with sand, your accumulating nutrients/detritus that you want out in the first place. That's why you probably set up your fuge to begin with...

I siphon it out with water changes. However, between those times I have a fighting conch vacuuming it up. He's the only critter besides pods who lives there.
