I read somewhere online it was possible to build your own ro system? does anyone have any tutorials or directions on how to do this?

You could piece a system together if you wanted to but I think the parts would be more $$$ than the system.

There are only 2 company's that make RO membrains. I think the Filmtec are the most used by Dow.

unless you have the housings for the filters, it will cost more to build one. membranes will run around $50 to $75 carbon/filters $30 or so.
I purchased a complete unit from costco and changed out the membrane/regulator for about $220.

You can do much better than that.
I have a local source that I get Filmtec 50 GPD membrains from for $25 and carbon blocks for $10.

www.airwaterice.com has some of the best online prices I found. They are by far the cheapest source of color change nuclear grade DI resins.
