I just noticed i have these small clear bubbles on the beanches of my gorgonian. When i take them off,the branch falls apart and i a m left with a piece of dead stick. Now i noticed some bubbles on my GSP>What is this stuff? How do i eliminate it? I do a water change every 11 days with distilled water.Every thing else is fine.I have had this piece for over 4 years with no problems

Microbubbles? Some say they can hurt corals (though Dr. Ron told me it's a fallacy). But it sounds like you might have the same issue?

I suggest posting this in one of the specialty forums or one of the ask-so-and-so forums, since it seems you've stumped us general reef readers.

It sounds like cyano.

I've never heard of cyano being clear bubbles. Cyano is the red slime bacteria that encrusts rock, coral and glass especially when you use tap water.

There are many types of cyano, and the bubbles are probably being produced by a thin film of it.

if its cyano, how do you get rid of it?

That sucks. You learn something new everyday.

If it is cyano, then it's because of high nutrients, mostly phosphates. You just have to lower nutrients, or increasing flow sometimes helps too.

Can i cut a healthy branch off to save it?

I suppose you could, if you think that is the only way, but it won't solve your underlying cyano problem. If you frag it, the cyano is still there to kill it. I scrub my gorg with a soft toothbrush if I ever see any cyano on it. I don't know what yours is like, but mine looks like this:

Thanks. I've only had it for about 3 months, but the polyps have grown HUGE, as you can tell from the picture. I don't know why the polyps are freakishly large, probably because it eats like a pig.

I occasionally see clear bubbles at the tips of my purple gorgonian's branches. Sometimes they almost appear like they are under the tissue (?). It is not cyano. I just leave it alone and it dissappears. The gorgonian is very healthy.

Yeah, but they're on his GSP's too. It sounds like cyano to me, but who knows. A pic would help.
