I'm in the process of planning my 180 gallon (72x24x24) FOWLER or reef tank. I'd like to keep an Asfur Angel (Arusetta asfur) but I've read they get up to 16".

Does anyone have an adult, grown-out, Asfur - what size did it end up - and what size tank do you keep it in?

They get around 40cm (15-16inches) in total lenghth and in that case a tank minimum would be around a 135. This comes from Marine Fishes by Scott Michael.

Your 180 should be fine for him although you didn't mention how many other fish you were going to keep. If you want an Asfur full grown you may want a lightly populated aquarium....

Just something to think about here....a fish that maximizes out at 16" in a tank that is 6' long will take up 22% of the tank length. Not much room for him/her to swim, especially after you add live rock for aquascaping. BTW, Asfur Angels like a lot of live rock/caves.

Thanks for the replies.

The concensus is that the Asfur Angel does get to 16", I think I'll give an Asfur a miss. Even if he may fit and survive - a 16" fish in a 180 gallon tanks just does not seem right.

Are asfur angels reefsafe?
I saw this one at the lfs about 3" sooo nice, but I donĀ“t know about their habits
Thanks in advance

I still haven't set my take up, so I still have a choice between reef or FOWLER.

As far as if the Asfur is reef-safe, here's a starting point:

I ended up deciding that a 16" fish in a 72 x 24 x 24 tank just wouldn't be in the fish's best interest.

Good Luck
