Like many others I'm new to the hobby. I have seen multiple posts about people setting up a "closed loop". What is this and what is the purpose? Are there any other type of "loop"?

I searched this site multiple times using the Google but could not find a thread that explained this topic.

Thanks.

Closed loop is a simple system. A pump sucks water out of the tank and spits it back in. It's for water circulation (I'm building one right now.)

There is also open loop. My sump is an open loop. Water drains into the sump and is pumped back into the tank using a pump.

Think of it this way, with a closed loop, the water doesn't hit the air.

Closed loops are used to get the flow you need in the tank with out going through the sump.

Jump over to the Do it yourself forum. Someone has drawn a picture of a closed loop showing the water flow.

Ok, I checked the diagram and have a better idea of what it is now. What are the manifolds? Do you always have to drill the tank to setup the closed loop?

Thanks for the info.
