Sump, Refiguim(spelling)??????????? help

Hello,
I currently have a 55 FOWLR (#35-40) with two damsels, and after today two percula clowns. I am soon getting a 300 gallon and am curious about this whole sump refriguim (i am a horrible speller). What are they? how do i make one? pros and cons? i am a DIY'er and if they are benificial i would like to set one up for the 55 and the soon 300.
Any and all advice including DIY plans ect, would be great.
